Vitamin C for Eyes – Can It Help??

Most of us have heard that Vitamin C can help keep the immune system strong and possibly stave off the common cold. However, should you take Vitamin C for eyes and their health?

Vitamin C for EyesA few research studies show that this organic compound may in fact provide benefit to eyesight. Let’s take a look…

What Does Vitamin C Really Do for Eyes?

The American Optometric Association states that virtually all cells in the body, including the eyes, depend on Vitamin C. For example, this vitamin helps support health blood vessels and capillaries, as well as the absorption of iron.

Unlike some nutrients, the human body does not produce Vitamin C. Therefore, we must consume it through our food or supplementation. Some foods rich in Vitamin C include strawberries, oranges, grapefruit, broccoli and red and green peppers.

We also know Vitamin C for its positive effect on the immune system. And a healthy body can, in turn, help the eyes maintain their vision capabilities as well.

In addition, Dr Josh Axe notes that Vitamin C helps to fend off free radical damage in the eyes. For instance, blue light from daily computer use, UV sun exposure and a nutrient-poor diet can contribute to free radical damage.

Benefits of Vitamin C for Vision:

Close Up or Healthy EyeThe National Eye Institute sponsored a study called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (or AREDS).

They discovered that high dose Vitamin C, along with Vitamin E, beta-carotene and zinc reduced the likelihood of AMD by 25% among people at high risk of developing advanced stages of the disease.

In addition, WebMD reports that Vitamin C may delay the onset of cataracts. Although this antioxidant may not prevent the disease entirely, it may be able to slow down its progression significantly.

In summary, Vitamin C does not provide a cure for blurry vision, eye strain, itchy dry eyes or redness. However, it may supply a level of protection due to its immune-boosting function in the body.

Furthermore, Vitamin C may be good for your eyes specifically when used in combination with the AREDS formula for eye health.
